Centered on the development needs of the international engineering industry, the summer school delivered a high-quality curriculum system featuring academic frontiers, industry practice, cultural immersion and innovation competitions. It brought together world-leading scholars and industry pioneers in engineering, building a cross-border, cross-sector and interdisciplinary platform for participants to connect and grow.

The academic module featured high-level keynote lectures and courses delivered by distinguished domestic and international experts in civil engineering and engineering management. Professor FANG Dongping, principal organizer of the summer school, opened the programme with a lecture on construction safety. Professor Wilson Lu from the University of Hong Kong addressed the digital transformation of the construction industry and shared core pathways for industrial reform. Professor Roger Flanagan from the University of Reading gave an in-depth talk on risk management in international engineering, outlining core logics for international project management. In addition, Dr. Rashid Maqbool from the University of Manchester presented cutting-edge research on AI-enabled circular construction and discussed decarbonisation pathways for urban renovation. Associate Professor LI Xinming from the University of Alberta shared the latest advances in engineering research. Professor ZHANG Shuibo from Tianjin University delivered a presentation on the 15th Five-Year Plan and the development of the engineering sector. Cheng Ting Ning, Executive Director of the Construction Industry Council of Hong Kong, recounted the innovation and collaboration journey behind the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. Kevin O’Brien, Chief Executive Officer of Gammon Construction, also shared valuable industry perspectives.

To expose participants to hands-on international-engineering practices, the summer school arranged site visits to benchmark enterprises and institutions covering infrastructure development, digital construction and financial investment.

Beyond professional studies, rich cultural-immersion activities were organised for global participants to understand China and build friendships through on-site experiences. Various social events were held in spare time, fostering mutual understanding and friendship among participants and making the summer school a bridge for cultural exchange.

At the closing ceremony, completion certificates were awarded to participants who had fulfilled all course requirements. 

The successful delivery of the Tsinghua Summer School for International Construction provided a premium learning and exchange platform for young global engineering talents. It advanced academic dialogue and industrial cooperation in international engineering, while showcasing China’s achievements and openness in the construction sector to the world.

Moving forward, Tsinghua University will leverage its disciplinary strengths in civil engineering and engineering management to develop high-level international programmes. It will nurture more globally-minded, innovative-minded and socially-responsible professionals for the global engineering community, and work with partners worldwide to write new chapters for international infrastructure development.
