ICPM Course Introduction: Legal and Contractual Issues Course

With knowledge as the core and activities to stimulate learning interest, students embark on anengaging learning journey in the course on “Legal and Contractual Issues”. They explore the complex world of construction contracts, from a macro perspective of the industry, to diverse project delivery models, with the goal of gaining a deep understanding of the multifaceted environment they will face in their future professional career.

The course adopts a flipped classroom combined with project-based learning approach, which allows students to learn at their own pace and apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Students are able to interact with their classmates and the instructor, Professor PinChao Liao, who is an expert in the field of construction law, with rich teaching and practical experience. He guides students through the challenges and opportunities of contract formation and management, and give valuable feedback and suggestions.

The course also integrates theory and practice, immersing students in practical management practices. They learn how to create and manage contracts effectively, considering various aspects such as project delivery, payment methods, framing, etc. They also gain insights into the dynamic interplay that shapes the contractual landscape within the construction domain. They explore concepts such as ZOPA (zone of possible agreement) and dissect essential elements of negotiation strategies. Students are inspired by the role-playing and artificial intelligence scenarios of contract negotiation, which challenge them to apply their skills and creativity. Students also learn how to handle various intellectual property rights, patents, and infringement issues, since some guest lectures will be give by experpts in those fields, who will share their expertise and experience with students.

In essence, this course transcends the conventional boundaries of legal and contractual studies, offering students a holistic and practical education that prepares them to navigate the complexities of the construction industry with acumen, integrity, and a commitment to excellence.
